Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus

Introduction to qualification

In the often high-risk projects of construction-related industry sectors, locating and avoiding underground apparatus and services is a fundamental activity and one that requires acute attention to detail.


This certification and assessment delivers the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding of the Location and Avoidance of Underground Apparatus. It is primarily aimed at Operatives and Supervisors who have to locate underground apparatus.

Qualification outline

With a mix of practical, video, and classroom-based exercises and tutorials, learners will cover legislative and administrative knowledge and awareness while taking part in practical tuition, focusing on location and avoidance of apparatus throughout.

Our occupationally and technically-experienced assessors will assess learners in this one-day course, awarding delegates following simulated assessments and a multiple-choice exam.

Course programme

This training is essential for operatives and supervisors to learn the legislative framework, practical actions they must take, safety principles and more. In addition, learners will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance, and understand procedures and appropriate documentation and classifications.


The course content includes:


  • New Roads and Street Works Act
  • Basic principles of location and avoidance of underground services
  • Hazard identification and the risks associated with them
  • Reading and interpreting site plans
  • Identifying duct and cable
  • Practical use of equipment

On completion

At the end of the assessment, successful learners will:


  • Understand the basic principles of the NRSW Act
  • Identify potential risks to themselves and others
  • Read and understand site plans
  • Operate cable avoidance tools to avoid or locate underground apparatus
