EXCAVATOR 180 - BELOW/ABOVE AND BELOW 5 TONNES

Introduction to qualification

The excavator 180 is a versatile machine that proves helpful to a range of jobs on-site. Often referred to as a backhoe with its scooping action of the shovel, the machine can excavate materials in bulk and move them left to right through 180 degrees. Safely operating such a large and vital piece of kit requires attention and skill to protect everyone involved.

This excavator 180 course delivers the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding to operate an excavator safely.

Qualification outline

With a mix of practical and theory-based exercises and tutorials, learners will cover manufacturer information and general knowledge of an excavator 180 and participate in practical activities to recognise machine components, functions, best practices and operating methods.

Course programme

This training is essential for workers to operate an excavator 180 safely. Learners will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance, understand procedures and appropriate documentation and classifications.


The course will take learners through:


  • Preparing an excavator 180 for use in a live scenario
  • All environmental considerations and the impact of using an excavator poses
  • Safety checks in the work area and the machine, daily and weekly
  • How to operate an excavator 180 safely and efficiently
  • Mounting and dismounting the machine
  • Operating on slopes, inclines and other challenging terrains
  • Loading and unloading procedures for excavator 180 transportation
  • All work and shut down procedures

On completion

On completion of this training course, learners will have sufficient knowledge and information to enable them to complete the theory and practical tests for 180 excavators.

  

At the end of this training, learners will:


  • Understand and recognise all learned endorsements
  • Have excellent knowledge of health & safety legislation, including lifting operations, lifting equipment regulations and lifting signals to BS7121 
  • Ability to carry out pre-start and running checks on the machine 
  • Be confident to set the excavator 180 for site travel and relevant duties
  • Travel over differing types of terrain, including undulating ground and slope 
  • Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction 
  • Create a vertical trench to the specified dimensions 
  • Complete a square excavation with vertical sides at the end of the dug trench 
  • Know the correct procedure to load material into a vehicle 
  • Be able to remove the bucket and replace it with an alternative 
  • Lifting, loading and rotating to the appropriate degrees and radius
  • Reinstating a work area back to the original state 
  • Shutdown and secure procedures 
  • Loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter


On successfully completing this course, learners receive their certification, valid for up to five years.

This Excavator 180 course is suitable for those who wish to pursue a career in plant operations. This course is available to those who need full training, refresher training and/or test through the experienced worker test route.

This comprehensive training prepares learners to safely and responsibly operate an excavator 180. The training options vary to accommodate novices and seasoned and experienced learners:


Novice training - ten days with a maximum of three delegates
