VEHICLE MARSHAL

When moving and positioning plant machinery or transport vehicles, the safety of everyone involved, directly or in the vicinity, relies heavily on the experience and expertise of the marshal on-site to avoid accidents and collisions. Acute attention to detail and crystal clear communication techniques are vital to a smooth operation.

This course delivers the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding to communicate and guide vehicles safely and effectively. It is for plant operators who require practical and theory-based training and assessment to direct or guide vehicles as part of their daily duties on-site.

Through a mix of practical and theory-based exercises and tutorials, learners will cover manufacturer and general knowledge and responsibilities of vehicle marshalling while participating in practical plant operating activities, safety procedures, and best practices.

This training is essential for workers to work as vehicle marshals safely. Learners will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance, and understand procedures, appropriate documentation and classifications.

The course content includes:

• A basic understanding of the industry and the relevant legislation
• The dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a vehicle marshal
• Knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular vehicle/machine they are guiding
• Signs and signals, approved hand signals and different forms of communication
• Identifying and maintaining PPE appropriate for vehicle marshal duties
• Conducting all necessary safety checks at the work area, including stop blocks and tipping areas
• Setting up exclusion zones for unloading
• Guiding vehicles in a forward and reverse direction, including confined spaces and "blind areas", safely and efficiently
• Environmental considerations and impact
• All end of shift and shut down and parking procedures

On completion of this training course, learners will have sufficient knowledge and information to enable them to complete the theory and practical tests for vehicle marshalling.

On successfully completing this course, learners receive their certification, valid for up to five years.
