LORRY LOADER

Lorry loaders are widely used in construction and utility works, street works, highway electrical, machinery, container and portable unit installation. Essentially a crane mounted on a vehicle for loading on-site is a mobile solution for lifting operations.

Proving its versatility, a lorry loader can be remotely controlled or operated manually with one of the following attachments and accessories:

• Clamshell Bucket (Grab)
• Crane Swivel (Hook)
• Brick/Block (Clamp)
• Vehicle lifting (Frame)

This course delivers the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding to operate a lorry loader safely and effectively.

With a mix of practical and theory-based exercises and tutorials, learners will cover manufacturer information and general knowledge of a lorry loader and participate in practical activities to recognise machine components, functions, best practices and operating methods.

This training is essential for workers to operate a lorry loader safely. Learners will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance, and understand procedures, appropriate documentation and classifications.

The course content includes:

• The nature of the industry sector and their role and responsibilities as a lorry loader operator 
• The purpose, basic construction, controls and terminology of principal components
• All manufacturer requirements as per the operator’s handbook, additional information sources and relevant regulations and legislation 
• All pre-use checks for a lorry loader
• Configuring and setting a lorry loader for site and highway travel 
• Travelling over rough, undulating ground, substantial inclines and level surfaces; laden and unladen 
• Manoeuvring in confined spaces 
• All actions required for hazards, underground and overhead services 
• Using hiab hook to lift material and equipment
• Extracting differing types of materials from stockpiles and other sources 
• Forming stores of segregated materials and constructing temporary ramps 
• Sorting and placing materials into transporting vehicles and hoppers 
• Spreading and levelling ground and materials 
• Carrying out shut down and securing procedures for a lorry loader
• Explaining the loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting 

On completion of this training course, learners will have sufficient knowledge and information to enable them to complete the theory and practical tests for lorry loaders.

At the end of this training, learners will:

• Understand and recognise all learned endorsements
• Have excellent knowledge of health & safety legislation, including lifting operations, lifting equipment regulations and lifting signals to BS7121 
• Ability to carry out pre-start and running checks on the machine 
• Be confident to set the lorry loader for site travel and relevant duties
• Travel over differing types of terrain, including undulating ground and slope 
• Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction
• Complete safe lifts with selected lorry loader attachments
• Know the correct procedure to load material into a vehicle 
• Be able to remove attachments and replace it with an alternative 
• Lifting, loading and rotating to the appropriate degrees and radius
• Shutdown and secure procedures 
• Loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter

On successfully completing this course, learners receive their certification, valid for up to five years.

This lorry loader course is suitable for those who wish to pursue a career in plant operations. This course is available to those who need full training, refresher training and/or test through the experienced worker test route.
