LOADING SHOVEL

Loading Shovels performs heavy-duty earthwork and construction operations, such as extracting from a stockpile or bank and loading vehicles. A tractor-like vehicle with a shovel attachment, the recycling and waste sector in particular often uses this style of machine, allowing versatility of movement and loading capabilities.

This Loading Shovel course delivers the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to operate a loading shovel safely and effectively. It is for plant operators who require practical and theory-based training and assessment to use a loading shovel on-site.

With a mix of practical and theory-based exercises and tutorials, learners will cover manufacturer information and general knowledge of a loading shovel and participate in practical activities to recognise machine components, functions, best practices and operating methods.

This training is essential for workers to operate a loading shovel safely. Learners will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance, understand procedures and appropriate documentation and classifications.

The course will take learners through:

• The nature of the industry sector and their role and responsibilities as a plant operator
• The purpose, basic construction, controls and terminology of principal components
• All manufacturer’s requirements as per the operator’s handbook, additional information sources and relevant regulations and legislation
• All pre-use checks for wheeled loading shovels
• Configuring and setting the plant for site and highway travel
• Travelling over rough, undulating ground, substantial inclines and level surfaces; laden and unladen
• Manoeuvring in confined spaces
• Configuring and setting the wheeled loading shovel for extraction and loading duties
• All actions required for hazards, underground and overhead services
• Extracting differing types of materials from stockpiles and other sources
• Forming stores of segregated materials and constructing (temporary) ramps
• Sorting and placing materials into transporting vehicles and hoppers
• Spreading and levelling ground and materials
• Carrying out shut down and securing procedures for a wheeled loading shovel
• Explaining the loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting

On completion of this training course, learners will have sufficient knowledge and information to enable them to complete the theory and practical tests for loading shovels.

At the end of this training, learners will:

• Understand and recognise all learned endorsements
• Have excellent knowledge of health & safety legislation, including lifting operations, lifting equipment regulations and lifting signals to BS7121 
• Ability to carry out pre-start and running checks on the machine 
• Be confident to set the loading shovel for site travel and relevant duties
• Travel over differing types of terrain, including undulating ground and slope 
• Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction 
• Complete loading manoeuvres in line with operator guidance
• Know the correct procedure to load material into a vehicle 
• Shutdown and secure procedures 
• Loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter

On successfully completing this course, learners receive their certification, valid for up to five years.

This loading shovel course is suitable for those who wish to pursue a career in plant operations. This course is available to those who need full training, refresher training and/or test through the experienced worker test route.

This comprehensive training prepares learners to safely and responsibly operate a loading shovel. The training options vary to accommodate novices and seasoned and experienced learners:
