WORKING AT HEIGHT WITH STEPS AND LADDERS

Introduction to qualification

Proper ladder use requires competency and awareness of the different types and safety measures for any given purpose. 

Identifying the correct type of ladder and ensuring it is in good condition and appropriately secured or tied to prevent movement are just some of the basic rules of ladder use, sometimes overlooked by operatives looking to get a job done quickly. 

This Totally Training Ladder Awareness qualification provides the knowledge and skills to use a ladder safely, from selecting the correct type to inspection, planning, and operation.

Learners will receive training in the various legislation associated with working at height and a background in the different additional pieces of access equipment available to aid safety and prevent accidents. 

Qualification outline

With a mix of practical, video and theory-based exercises and tutorials, learners will cover compliance with relevant legal obligations associated with ladder and step ladder work. In addition, the course gives hands-on training on various types of ladders expected for use within working at height operations and the pre-use checks that must happen. 

The course reflects national standards and industry best practices and is fully accredited in line with regulations. In addition, choose to learn with Totally Training, learners benefit from our custom-built training facilities and customer-first approach.

Our occupationally and technically-experienced tutors coach learners on this course, completing the session with a practical observation and theory examination. Learners must complete all assessments to pass this qualification. 

Course programme

This half-day training is a mixture of classroom-based discussion and practical demonstrations focusing on ladder and step ladder safety on-site.

Learners will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance and inspections, and understand procedures, appropriate documentation and classifications.


The course content includes:


  • Legislation - Working at Height 2005
  • Correct and safe use of ladders and step ladders
  • Components and their functions of ladders and step ladders
  • Pre-use inspections and measures to take in case of issues
  • Securing and storing ladders appropriately
  • Planning and organising work and making emergency arrangements
  • Care, maintenance and certification
  • Record keeping of the ladder equipment


Assessment consists of a short written assessment paper.

On completion

At the end of the training, successful learners will:


  • Demonstrate an understanding of Working at Height 2005
  • Apply the avoidance hierarchy of control
  • Select appropriate methods and safe systems of work with ladders
  • Protection of others who may be affected by the ladder work activity
  • Inspection of the workplace and ladder equipment
  • Adopt appropriate safety arrangements when using ladders and stepladders
  • Demonstrate their ability to carry out pre-use equipment inspection
  • Operate ladders and step ladders safely

  • Implement care, maintenance, certification and record-keeping of the ladder equipment


On successfully completing the course, delegates receive a Totally Training Certificate of Competence, valid for three years.

This Totally Training Safety Ladder Awareness training course is for anyone whose role includes working at heights or who needs to use a ladder within their role. Managers and supervisors who oversee work will also benefit, enabling them to ensure staff are working appropriately.

Things You need to know

No previous knowledge or experience of ladders is required to take this course. 
The content includes awareness of periodic examinations of equipment, but it does not provide full training in maintenance of equipment. Additional training is available for this, and further information is available upon request. In addition, practical exercises will not include falls of any kind, and the learner will not be deemed competent in rescue procedures. 

The training has practical elements, so learners must inform their tutor if they have any serious health issues, physical problems, special considerations or are taking any medication, which may create difficulties in any elements of this course. In addition, learners should also bring suitable PPE on the day of training, for example, safety helmets, safety shoes or boots, hi-vis and gloves.

For training held at your own location, please ensure that the classroom you make available has a 240v power supply and is a suitable size for the number of learners attending. In addition, please ensure that the practical area has been risk assessed, is free from harm and is suitable for training. One step ladder, a leaning ladder, barriers and a safe and stable area to erect them should also be available for the practical exercise.
