Level 2 nvq CERTIFICATE IN PLANT OPERATIONS

Introduction to qualification

Plant and machinery on-site are highly versatile despite their size. With singular machines made multi-purpose thanks to attachments, few are single-use machines - which can be more sustainable and cost-effective. However, attachments can be large and tricky to fit to the untrained, and with heavy loads and safety at risk from poor fitting, there is a very valid case for proper attachment fitting training on construction machines.

This Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction) qualification enables learners to demonstrate and recognise skills, knowledge, understanding and competence in a real workplace environment so they can work as a Plant Operator within the construction industry. Taking this Level 2 in Plant Operations also allows learners to upgrade to the blue CPCS or NPORS-CSCS Competent Operator Card.

The qualification enables learners to show they are a competent Plant Operator. As such, we can tailor the course to specialise in a particular item of plant:

  • 180 Excavator
  • 360 Excavator (excavating or extracting)
  • Agricultural tractor
  • Crawler tractor/dozer
  • Crusher
  • Dump truck (rigid or articulated)
  • Forklift side-loader
  • Forward tipping dumper
  • Industrial forklift truck
  • Loader compressor
  • Lorry loader
  • MEWPs (boom or scissor)
  • Pedestrian operated tower crane
  • Reach truck
  • Ride-on roller
  • Rough terrain masted forklift truck
  • Screener
  • Sideloader forklift
  • Skid steer loader
  • Soil landfill compactor
  • Telescopic handler
  • Tracked loading shovel
  • Wheeled loading shovel

Qualification outline

We assess this NVQ over two on-site assessments while the delegate is carrying out their day-to-day duties. Rather than producing a portfolio over time, our specifically assigned assessors gather evidence in the form of photographs, videos, method statements and professional discussions to take forward for examination.

To pass this qualification, learners must successfully complete and achieve all three Mandatory Units and Optional Units. The amount of optional units taken will depend on the type of plant machinery.

Course programme

Learners taking this Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction) will cover knowledge, skills and practices to learn the fundamentals of operations requiring either lifting, digging and loading.

Course Content:

Mandatory Units - must achieve all three:

  • General workplace safety competence
  • Efficient workplace practices
  • Preparing plant or machinery for operational performance

Optional Units - The amount of units taken will depend on the machinery used, but includes:

  • Preparing and operating excavator cranes to lift and transfer loads in the workplace
  • Preparing and operating rough terrain masted forklifts to lift and transfer loads
  • Preparing and operating telescopic handlers to lift and transfer
  • Preparing and operating lorry loaders or knuckle booms to lift and transfer loads
  • Preparing and operating wheeled loading shovels to extract loose materials
  • Preparing and operating skid steer loaders to extract loose materials
  • Preparing and operating loader compressors to extract loose materials
  • Preparing and operating forward tipping dumpers to receive, transport and discharge materials
  • Preparing and operating rear-tipping dump trucks to receive, transport and discharge materials
  • Preparing and operating tractors with towed equipment for non-agricultural activities
  • Preparing and operating scissor-type mobile elevating work platforms - MEWP
  • Preparing and operating boom-type mobile elevating work platforms - MEWP
  • Preparing and operating mast climber-type mobile elevating work platforms -MEWP

On completion

Upon successfully completing this qualification, learners will have the skills, knowledge, understanding, and competence to progress to a higher-level qualification in the same or similar occupational area.

As a result of completing the Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Plant Operations (Construction), learners can apply for the Blue Competent Operator Card.

Who should attend?

Any person or employee who works within construction who needs to obtain a nationally recognised qualification in plant operations. This NVQ is also required both for red CPCS Plant Operations trained operator cardholders and red NPORS-CSCS Plant Operations trained operator cardholders in order to upgrade to the Blue Competent Operator Card.

Course duration

We advise between 6 and 9 months from induction to complete most Level 2 NVQs. The duration within this time depends on delegate experience, circumstances, and work.
