CITB HEALTH AND SAFETY AWARENESS (HSA)

Introduction to qualification

Construction and civil engineering are pivotal to modern-day living. Working in these industries can be a life-long career, and we believe, hugely rewarding. So, the best way for people to progress is to start with solid, knowledgeable foundations - understanding the risks and as well the rewards.

And that’s where this CITB Health and Safety Awareness course comes in. The ideal introduction to the industry, it provides a practical summary of health and safety, welfare and environmental issues, individual and co-worker responsibilities, employer duties, and what they must do if they think someone’s health and safety is at risk.


Ultimately, this training aims to educate learners to understand​:


  • Why they are carrying out their identified duties
  • What is expected of them
  • Their contribution to safety of the workplace

Qualification outline

Primarily classroom-based exercises and tutorials featuring best practice sharing, group work, and discussions, learners will cover legislative and practical knowledge and awareness. Working towards understanding the what, when, and why of safety practices and procedures in the industry.

This training is essential to health and safety awareness in our industry. Learners will review legal requirements, learn safety measures, ensure safety compliance, and understand procedures.

At the end of the training, successful learners will be able to:


  • Understand the need to prevent accidents
  • Have an appropriate level of understanding of health and safety law
  • Identify how their role fits into the control and management of the site
  • Understand the need for risk assessments and method statements
  • Appreciate the need to perform safely and to stop and ask for advice if not sure
  • Report unsafe acts to prevent an accident

Who should attend?

The CITB Health and Safety Awareness course is for those who have entered, or are about to enter, the construction and civil engineering industry as a member of the workforce, to help them understand the potential hazards they face at work on site.

Course duration

This one-day fundamentals course trains learners to understand the challenges, processes and fundamentals of health and safety in construction and civil engineering on completion and certification.
