CITB Temporary Works Supervisor

Introduction to qualification

There is a lot to consider in implementing temporary works, from in-depth preparation in health and safety to design briefs, hiring subcontractors, legal wranglings and more. To supervise these operations, workers need to be adaptable, knowledgeable and have a keen eye for detail, while effectively managing their coordinators.

This Temporary Works Supervisor course looks at health and safety, coordination, implementation and management of temporary works operations. Training provides learners with a sound and broad knowledge base enabling them to supervise the coordination of the necessary elements.

Qualification outline

This course consists of classroom-based exercises and tutorials featuring best practice sharing, group work, video, and case studies. In addition, learners will cover legislative and practical knowledge and implementation of temporary works supervision.

The course reflects national standards and industry best practices and is fully accredited in line with regulations. Choose to learn with Totally Training and learners benefit from our custom-built training facilities and customer-first approach.

Our occupationally and technically-experienced tutors will coach and assess learners throughout this two-day course. On completion learners will receive five-year certification.

Course programme

This training is essential for Temporary Work Supervisors to learn the vast and varied elements of temporary works measures and controls. Learners will review legal requirements, learn safety measures, ensure safety compliance, and understand procedures.


The course will take learners through:


  • Various forms of Temporary Works - what, when and why
  • BS5975:2019 code of practice for temporary works procedures
  • Regulations and Codes of Practice for all temporary works operations
  • Temporary Works Supervisor role and duties
  • Understanding the need for temporary works policy and procedure
  • The background to temporary works Codes of Practice and relevant regulations including HASAWA, LOLER, PUWER, Work at Height & Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations
  • Awareness of the roles and responsibilities of designers and other parties identified in CDM Regulations 2015
  • The importance of approved drawings, specifications, risk assessments and method statements
  • Recognising the different levels of risks associated with varying temporary works schemes
  • The delegation process from the TWC, including inspections, checks, hold points, load capacities and permissions
  • The role of the Principal Contractor relating to hiring Temporary Works Supervisors (TWSs).

On completion

On completing this Temporary Works Supervisor course, learners will:


  • Understand the importance of communication, coordination, co-operation and competency. The ‘4Cs’
  • Be able to implement risk management: safety and business-related


This will allow the Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) to:


  • Understand the need for and duties of a TWS
  • Understand the role of others
  • Have detailed knowledge and understanding of BS5975:2019 relating to this role

This CITB Temporary Works Supervisor training course is for managers, supervisors, agents and personnel on-site with responsibility for supervising all forms of temporary works.

Things You need to know

For Temporary Works Supervisor training held at your location, please ensure that the classroom available has a 240v power supply and is suitable, safe and risk assessed for the number of learners attending.

In addition, learners must inform their trainer if they have any serious health issues, physical problems, special considerations or are taking any medication, which may create difficulties in undertaking elements of this training course so that we can make adjustments where possible.


Learners must also have working knowledge of the following legislation:


  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 
  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 
  • Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 
  • Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) 2015 
  • Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 
  • Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 
  • The Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 1992 
  • The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 
  • The Work at Height Regulations 2005


A key issue for temporary works is health and safety, so learners need to be prepared to discuss how health and safety legislation is relevant to temporary works, as well as which Approved Codes of Practice (ACOPs) and guidance notes may assist or contribute to safe practices in temporary works.
